Genre: Christian Fiction: Romance

The Golden Braid by Melanie Dickerson is a twist on the traditional fairy tale, Rapunzel. Rapunzel was raised by Gothel who found her in a patch of rapunzel. She was taught men were evil and would take advantage of her. However, her desire to learn often overcame her fear of men - especially her desire to read. She arranged to clean rooms in a monastery in exchange for reading lessons. They assigned an injured knight to teach her. He was a very handsome man who had actually already saved her life once. This led to opportunities that would teach her of her past that could possibly explain who she is and what really happened to her parents. As the secrets reveal themselves, hearts are softened, and revelations unveil themselves that could change Rapunzel's life forever.

This is such a fun read. Once I got into it, which took a few chapters, I couldn't stop reading! This is such a fun story, especially for those of us who still love those fairy tales. I have a thing for them. :) Rapunzel is a great character. She is a curious girl and isn't a wimpy female protagonist. She does rely on a man to save her a few times, but she also is able to take care of herself. She is a well developed character and I loved that about her! However, her well developed character also meant there were lots of details in the book. I know there are a lot of people who love the details, I am not one of them, so sometimes I'd skip paragraphs to move the story along. This isn't necessarily a bad thing for some, for me, it was. I loved the research that went into the history of this time period. I could tell there was quite a bit done in it... the food, the homes, the traditions... it was all there. I would recommend this book. I give it four stars. ****

This is also a book in a series of medieval fairy tale re-tellings by Melanie Dickerson, however, it works just fine not having read the previous books in the series.

Melanie Dickerson has a degree in special ed (how cool is that?) and has taught internationally - Georgia, Tennessee, Germany, and Ukraine. WO!!!

She currently lives in Alabama with her husband and two sons.
