This is the story of seventh grader Ben and his friends in ChiPS (Child Prodigy Society). There is a bully in their grade and someone needs to do something about him. Everyone is afraid of him, so a group of geniuses come together and use their brains to outsmart the bully by playing pranks on him that he may think are just bad luck. They slowly escalate. Will they get caught? Will the bully back down?
I enjoyed this book. It was a cute story that plays out what every child wishes they could do to the school bully. My son, a fifth grader, really enjoyed it. He loved the pranks they pulled on the bully. Unfortunately, my son has been the victim of a bully before so he really related well to Ben.
There were a handful of typos and errors scattered throughout the book that were a bit distracting for me, but I was able to figure out what they said easily. The close quotation marks were often open quotation marks as well. Also a bit distracting, but fairly easy to figure out.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book and think it's a great story to bring awareness to bullying and hope to children who often feel the victims of a bully.
I'm super excited to tell you a bit about the author because I think this is pretty cool. The story was written by a 12 year old boy, J.C. Bessoir, and his mother Dr. Donna Eget. The story is a work of fiction, but is based on actual events in J.C.'s life and the characters are based on his actual friends. What a very cool mother-son project this was, right? This is the bio I was sent on them, "Donna Eget is an emergency doctor who has graduated to urgent care, and spends free time with her family and writing fiction. Her son J.C. Bessoir is a typical sixth-grader who enjoys basketball, scouting and hanging out with his friends."
I give this book THREE stars. ***
